Frequently Asked Questions

What is Family Mediation Week?
Family Mediation Week is a national awareness campaign coordinated by the Family Mediation Council (FMC) each January. It aims to raise public awareness of family mediation as an alternative to court, and to help separating couples understand their options. Mediate UK participates every year with a programme of free webinars and events.
When is Family Mediation Week 2027?
Family Mediation Week 2027 runs from Monday 25 January to Friday 29 January 2027. Mediate UK's free webinar programme will run across all five days of the week.
Are the Mediate UK webinars really free?
Yes, all Mediate UK webinars during Family Mediation Service Week are completely free to attend. There is no obligation to book any service as a result of attending. Registration details will be confirmed closer to the event.
What topics will the webinars cover?
Full details will be announced shortly. Previous Family Mediation Week webinars have covered topics such as finances on divorce, child arrangements, the role of the family solicitor, and why court should be a last resort. We will update this page as soon as topics and speakers are confirmed.
What is family mediation and how does it work?
Family mediation is a process where a trained independent mediator helps separating couples reach their own agreements on issues such as child arrangements, finances on divorce, and property. It typically starts with a MIAM and then moves into joint mediation sessions. Most couples reach an agreement within three to five sessions.
Is mediation compulsory before going to court?
In most cases, yes. Before applying to the family court for a child arrangements order or financial order, you are required to attend a MIAM unless an exemption applies, such as domestic abuse or urgent safety concerns. The MIAM gives you the chance to find out whether mediation could help before taking your dispute to a judge.
How much does family mediation cost?
Costs vary depending on your situation, but mediation is almost always significantly cheaper than going to court. A MIAM with Mediate UK starts from £115 + VAT. Joint mediation sessions are charged per session, and you can find full pricing on our mediation costs page. Legal aid may be available if you qualify.
Can I attend the webinars if I am not currently separating?
Absolutely. The webinars are open to anyone with an interest in family mediation, including legal professionals, divorce coaches, support workers, and anyone who wants to better understand the process. You do not need to be going through a separation to attend.
