    About Portsmouth Family Mediation

Our Family Mediation Service in Portsmouth is based in Gatcombe House, a wonderful Grade II listed building built in 1780. The house was an Officer’s Mess, our third office which coincidentally was previously used by the army.

Background: I left university and was sponsored by the Magistrates Courts to complete my Law Finals. After qualifying as a Solicitor, I spent about 20 years working as a legal adviser and legal team manager in the Magistrates courts.

I have extensive experience in the criminal and family divisions of the Magistrates’ courts. I left the Magistrates’ courts as they amalgamated and I needed to spend more time with my family. I volunteered for Citizens Advice whilst training as a mediator and ended up working part-time for them as a supervisor.

I became accredited as a family mediator in May 2018

    QU:
Why did you want to become a family mediator?
“Having been a legal adviser in the family courts and seen parties attend court and the experiences they went through, I could see it was much better if they could come to a solution themselves and avoid the pain and confusion of going through the legal process. I could see the benefits of helping them to do this.
Friends encouraged me to train as a mediator as they believed I had the right qualities
I enjoy new challenges and felt training as a mediator was a good path to follow.”
    QU:
What do you like most about Family mediation?
“When parties you see not communicating or even looking at each other at the beginning of the process come to a set of proposals. Seeing them relax and able to communicate again.
Feeling that information given by me as a mediator can make a difference to parties moving forward. Seeing parties say what they need to say and feel they are listened to and acknowledged. Seeing parties come back from a meeting where I felt they were at a real impasse and then agreeing proposals.”
    QU:
What is the most difficult mediation situation you have dealt with?
“A high conflict situation where it was clear one of the parties was suffering from depression. I ended up having to separate them and continue the meeting with parties in different rooms.”
    QU:
What do you enjoy most about working with Mediate UK?
“The Company is very supportive. There is a really good team of mediators and staff at Mediate UK who will always encourage, support and help. There is excellent admin support at Mediate UK.
The Company is always looking at new ways to grow and develop and has some great innovative ideas including the legal packages on offer and backing charities like the Trussell Trust and Child Law Advice”
