I am a trained family mediator with 25 years’ experience of working with children and families. I am also a qualified Psychologist, Counsellor and NLP practitioner

Why did you want to become a family mediator?
After a number of years volunteering at a children’s supervised contact centre and speaking to families going through the court process, I was shocked at the amount of money that families were paying to solicitors to organise property and finance and child arrangements after divorce or separation, many running into tens of thousands I started to look for alternative ways to support families through the process. A family who I had worked with for over a year at the contact centred spent close to £80,000 trying to get to an agreement, after 4 sessions of family mediation (taking 8 weeks and a joint bill of £900) they had resolved their issues, had a written parenting plan and the children were once again spending time with both parents and grandparents.
What do you like most about Family mediation?
Most separating couples that I have supported have been tired of the fight and often with only the smallest amount of facilitated discussion they can come up with joint decisions that allows them to move on with their lives, but supporting children have safe and meaningful relationships with both parents and their wider families is the reason why I trained as a family mediator and why I have continued with the profession.
What is the most difficult mediation situation you have dealt with?
All the couples and families are different and have their unique challenges, but families who spend years going through a family court process often come to mediation as a last resort, I have worked with families who have spent their children’s entire lives fighting over child arrangements via the court, Cafcass and solicitors only to come to mediation to find resolution within a few sessions.
What do you enjoy most about working with Mediate UK?
Mediate UK are a family of mediators, I feel exceptionally supported and valued as part of the group even though for the most part I work remotely from the team. The support team are excellent and are super-efficient and organised.
